Future-Ready: Sophomore Career Exploration

For many high school students, the future can feel exciting and a little overwhelming.

Questions about college, careers, and life after graduation often come with uncertainty.

What am I interested in?

What am I good at?

What does a career in that field actually look like?

Recently, our 10th grade students had the opportunity to begin exploring those questions in a meaningful way during a career exploration trip to Doral, Florida.

The experience was designed to help students move beyond simply imagining their future and begin experiencing it firsthand.

During a two-day internship program, students were matched with professional environments that aligned with their interests and potential career aspirations. Some students spent time alongside veterinarians, while others observed ophthalmologists, worked with marketing professionals, and explored a variety of additional fields.

For many students, these experiences brought clarity to interests they had already begun to develop.

For others, they opened doors to possibilities they had never previously considered.

By interacting with professionals and observing the day-to-day realities of different careers, students gained valuable insight that simply cannot be replicated in a classroom setting.

Gretel Delgado, DSM Art Director, worked with students on the principals of art and marketing. She said about her time with them:

"It was a pleasure welcoming our Santa Rita Ranch sophomores for a marketing shadowing experience. They were engaged, thoughtful, and genuinely interested in learning how marketing and design support the mission of our schools. Their enthusiasm and curiosity reminded us how valuable it is to invest in the next generation of creative professionals, and seeing them connect their interests to real-world applications made the experience meaningful for our entire team."

The experience also provided exploration of future educational pathways.

Students visited Divine Savior Academy's Doral campus, where they shadowed upperclassmen and experienced campus life from a student's perspective. They saw firsthand how older students are preparing for college, leadership opportunities, and life beyond high school.

The trip continued with visits to Florida International University and the University of Miami.

As students toured the campuses, learned about academic programs, and experienced college environments firsthand, they were able to envision themselves taking similar steps in the future.

Every student has been uniquely created by God with gifts and abilities that can be used for His purpose. Part of our role as educators is helping students identify those gifts and providing opportunities to explore how they might use them in the future.

We are grateful for the professionals, mentors, and educational partners who helped make this experience possible, and we look forward to seeing how these students continue to grow as they pursue the opportunities ahead.
