Bringing History to Life

Learning about history through a textbook can teach students important dates, people, and events, but experiencing those places firsthand can make those lessons come alive in a completely different way.

Going Beyond the Classroom

Each spring, 8th grade students have the opportunity to step into the stories they have studied through a week-long trip to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Colonial Williamsburg.

During this experience, students walk through historic landmarks, exploring the places where important events took place. As the trip goes on, students gain a deeper appreciation for the people and events that shaped our nation.

Throughout the trip, students visit locations including:

• The United States Capitol Building
• The Supreme Court Building
• The National Archives
• The Library of Congress
• Arlington National Cemetery
• Smithsonian museums
• Independence Hall
• The Liberty Bell

Making Lasting Memories

One of the highlights for many students is Colonial Williamsburg, where history feels much more personal. Here, men and women are dressed in 1700s clothing and demonstrating what daily life looked like during that time. Students can imagine what life was like for the people who lived there.

Another memorable stop is Mount Vernon. Students explore George Washington’s home and take time to reflect on its history while enjoying the view of the Potomac River.

The most meaningful moments often happen outside the historic sites. Traveling together gives students the opportunity to strengthen friendships, encourage one another, and create memories with classmates. By the final day, many students find themselves wishing the trip would never end because of the connections they built and experiences they shared.

Students return home with a deeper understanding of our nation’s history, stronger relationships with their classmates, and memories they will carry with them long after they leave middle school.
